Highlights

The Bhutan Cultural Journey tour starts and ends in Paro.A unique combination of culture and walking without the commitment to extended trekking. This unique itinerary is packed with cultural experiences and a blend of varied day walks, some of which exceed 3500m, which will appeal to those who like to keep active whilst engaging with the rich culture and history that Bhutan has to offer. Beginning our journey in the serene Paro Valley we visit the famous Taktsang Monastery and museum before transferring by road to the Haa Valley. Here we take a walk to the Kila Gompa with views of the sacred Chomolhari peak. We have the unique experience of an overnight stay in a farmhouse before continuing over the Dochu La to Wangduephodrang where our accommodation is at a delightful lodge by the river. We visit the well known Gangtey Valley and from here we enter central Bhutan, well known for it’s many monasteries and dzongs. We spend some time exploring Trongsa and it’s dzong, and cross the 3590 metre Shertang La to gain entry to the Ura Valley. The return journey to Paro is just as magnificent as we retrace our steps back to Paro to conclude a memorable journey in the land of the thunder dragon.

Itinerary

After arriving & visa formalities and collection of baggage, Keep your copy of the visa clearance letter handy.You will be welcomed by our tour representative. Your entry can be through a flight or by road from Phuntsholing.In either case you will head towards Thimphu post your arrival in Bhutan.
On the way to Thimphu, You will cross The iron chain bridge might look frightening at first, but once you start crossing it, it becomes very fun.
After your arrival in Thimphu, you will check-in at your hotel. You will relax and freshen up a bit, post which you will visit the following:-

-National Memorial Chorten
The National Memorial was built by Bhutan’s third king, H.M.Jigme Dorji Wangchuck who is also known as the “father of modern Bhutan.” He wanted to erect a monument carrying the message of world peace and prosperity. However, he was unable to give shape to his idea in his lifetime due to pressures of state and other regal responsibilities. After his untimely demise in 1972,the Royal Family and Cabinet resolved to fulfill his wishes and erect a memorial that would perpetuate his memory.

Post breakfast you will be visiting the following places :-

-Buddha point(Kuensel Phodrang)
The Kuensel Phodrang or the Buddha point is the world’s largest sitting Buddha statue, the statue is 167 feet high. The statue is situated on top of a hill overlooking the city of Thimphu, it can be accessed by road and is about 15 minutes away from the city’s center. The word Kuensel means everything is clear and from this place you will sure enjoy a great view of the Thimphu Valley on both sides.

-Sangaygang
Sangaygang is bird’s eye view of Thimphu valley BBS Tower AKA Sangaygang which is located North West of the Thimphu Valley is the popular spot for the dating and taking a walk around the blue pines, it’s around miles drive from the Thimphu valley. The Places has the top hills which gives a clear view of the entire Thimphu valley in a nutshell and the feeling from there is just fantastic.

-Takin Zoo
The mini zoo contained a small number of Takin but the King of Bhutan later decreed that it was improper for a Buddhist nation to keep an animal in captivity. The animals were set free and the zoo was shut down, but for some reason the Takin refused to leave the area for the forests nearby.Instead the animals were frequently found.

-Changangkha lhakhang
The Chagangkha Lhakahng situated on a ridge overlooking the city, near Mothithang on the outskirts of Thimphu.The temple is the oldest temple in Thimphu and was constructed by Lama Phajo Drukgom Zhigpo in the 12 century AD.

-Weekend market
The weekend market is highly recommended to travelers who want to experience the local Bhutanese way of life.The weekend market is located in a set of stall of both side of the Wang Chhu River.The market essentially is a farmers market, where every week vendors from throughout the region start arriving by Thursday evening and stay at the market till Sunday.

Post early breakfast, you will be driven towards Punakha via Dochula Pass.You will stop at Dochula (3,100 m),where on a sunny day you can get stunning views of the Himalayan ranges.The Dochu La Pass is probably the best known mountain pass in Bhutan.Located at an altitude of 3150 meter above sea level,the Dochu La Pass is about 30 kilometer away from the capital city Thimphu and the road to Punakha.

-Punakha Dzong
The Punakha Dzong is located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and the Po Chhu River,combine to form the Puna Tsang Chu which in turn is a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra River.The Dzong was constructed by zhahbdrung Ngawang Namgyal Wangchuck in 1638 on the exact spot as prophesied by the Guru Rinpoche some 800 years ago.

After early morning breakfast,you will be taken for a morning hike up to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten.

The Yulley Namgyal Chorten,lies approximate 7 kilometer north of Punakha.The Chorten is situated along a hill up the valley and can be reached after a leisurely hike through the woods and rice paddies.The Yuelley Namgyal Chorten was constructed by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck,in the 1990’s, Built over a period of 9 years.The temple is dedicated to the well-being of all beings that reside in the Kingdom.

-Suspension Bridge
Behind Punakha Dzong stretches the Punakha Suspension bridge, the longest of its kind in Bhutan.The bridge connects the Dzong with the villages on the other bank of the Po Chhu river.Being the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan it’s a master piece of beauty.It’s a thrill to cross the bridge as it shakes and cool breeze passes over.You feel the joy and happiness of covering 200 meters on top of a river.

Post breakfast you will be driven towards Bumthang, before that you will visit Chimi Lhakhang

The ChimiLhakang is a Bhuddhist monastery located in the Punakha District of Bhutan.The monastery stands on a small hill close to the village of Lobesa and was constructed in 1499 by NgawangChoegyel.The monastery is also known as the temple of fertility and is visited not only by the Bhutanese but women from countries as far as Japan and United States to receive a special blessing that can help these women conceive children.

On the way you will visit Chendebji Chorten in Trongsa.
Located 2 kilometers away from the village of Chendebji is the Chendebji Chorten, a large Buddhist Stupa. The Chendebji Chorten is a large white structure built in likeness to the famous Bodhunath Stupa located in Kathmandu in Nepal. The Chorten was constructed by Lama Shinda from Tibet in the 19th century AD. The Stupa is believed to have been constructed at a spot where an evil spirit was subdued by the Lama.

Post breakfast you will be visiting the following places :-

-Burning lake

The Burning Lake or the Membartsho is a deep water pool in a gorge of the Tangchu River.As you trek down to the pool be warned that it is considered sacrilegious to enter the water body due to its holiness.According to legend Trenton Pema Lingpa,a disciple of Guru Rinpoche had a vision of a great treasure that lay at the bottom of the lake. Upon the declaration of his intent to go and recover this treasure from the pools bottom the Trenton was challenged that by the local governor about the presence of a treasure.He said to the governor if his vision were he would enter the pool with a lit butter lamp and only return when he had found the treasure,and with the lamp still lit.He is believed to have spent a long time looking for the treasure underwater,but when he emerged back out of the water he came out with the treasure and the butter lamp still burning hence giving the lake its name.

-Kurjey Lhakhang

According to legend Sendhu Raja,the King of Bumthang was very ill and invited Guru Rinpoche the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan to give him a cure for his ailment.Upon his investigation the Guru Rinpoche discovered that the illness was caused by the malevolent local deities including the Sheling Karpo.Upon finding out that these deities were responsible,the angry Guru chased them in to a cave.Guru Rinpoche then sat there and meditated for three months, upon waking up he subdued the deities and cured the thankful King of his ills.The guru left an imprint of his body in the cave to serve as a reminder to all evil beings of his wrath.

-Jambeylhakhang

JambayLhakhang was built by King Srongsen Gampo of Tibet in 659 AD.The temple was blessed by Guru Rimpoche during his visit to Bumthang.It is said that Guru Rimpoche was the one who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. It was renovated by Sindhu Raja after Guru Rimpoche restored his life with his magical powers. Many believe that there is a natural lake under the temple in which Guru Rimpoche took refuge on several occasions.

Post breakfast you will be driven towards Gangtey:-

After reaching Gangtey you will visit Phobjikha Valley.

Phobjikha is a wide glacial valley located in close to the Gangtey Monastery.The Phobjikha valley is the winter home of the rare Black Necked Cranes that migrate from Tibet from the arid plains of Tibet to roost in the more comfortable climate of the Phobjikha Valley.The valley is at an altitude of 2900 meters above sea level and experiences a much lighter winter as compared to the harsh extremes of Tibet.

Post breakfast you will drive towards Paro and on the way you will be visiting:-

– Gangtey Goemba

The Gangtey Monastery is an important monastery associate with the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism.The Monastery is Located in the Wandue Phodrang Dzongkhag in central Bhutan.The Gangtey Monastery is situate in the picturesque Phobjikha Valley,which is also renowned for being the winter home of the rare Tibetan Black Necked Cranes.The monastery was established in 1613 by Peling Gyalse Rinpoche, the grandson of Trenton Pema Lingpa the great treasurer discoverer.

-After arrival in Paro you will visit to local market of Paro to shop and to take home gifts, Bhutan offers a variety of goods that revolve mainly round textiles. You may shop for items like hand-woven textiles that is either in raw silk or silk, carved masks of various animals,woven baskets of cane and bamboo, wooden bowls known as Dapas, handmade paper products or finely crafted gods of silver.

Post breakfast you will be doing the sightseeing as follows:-

-Rimpung Dzong

The Paro Dzong is probably Bhutan’s best known and most iconic Dzong.This is probably the first building you will notice when you land at Paro International Airport and will probably be your first memory of Bhutan.The imposing Dzong is perhaps the finest example of Dzong architecture existing the world today. The fortress was constructed in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal on the foundations of an ancient monastery.

-Ta Dzong (National Museum)
The Ta Dzong was constructed in 1656 with a purpose to give advance warning to the Paro Dzong incase of an approaching army, in fact the word Ta means ‘to see’in Dzongkha.The future first king was imprisoned here for a brief period in 1872. In 1968 the Ta Dzong was converted into the National Museum of Bhutan. The Museum houses a priceless collection of textile, costumes, paintings, appliqué, wooden handicrafts, weapons,armour and jewellery.

-Kyichu Lhakhang.
The Jowo Temple of Kyichu is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan.The temple was built by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo in the 7th Century AD.The Kyichu Lhakhang was one of the 108 temples constructed by him to subdue a demon that was terrorizing the people of the Himalayas.The temple is believed to have been visited by the Guru Rinpoche in the 8th Century during his visit to the Paro Valley.

-Farm House
The natural beauty of Paro valley is enhanced by picturesque farm houses dotted among the fields and on the hillsides.The two to three-storied Bhutanese farmhouses are authentic in appearance,with colorfully decorated outer walls and lintels, and are traditionally built without the use of nails.All houses follow the same architectural style. A visit to a farmhouse gives an interesting glimpse into the lifestyle of a farming family.

Post early morning breakfast, you will be going for morning hike up to Taktsang Monastery, also known as ‘Tiger’s Nest’.

‘Tiger’s Nest Hanging precariously and magically from a rather steep cliff, the Taktshang monastery is a monument of genuine pride for the Bhutanese nation. It defies architectural principles to the core and amazes tourists from around the world. Taktshang. Its history is deeply associated with the visit of Guru Padmasambhava, the revered Indian saint who came to Bhutan in the 8th century AD.

In the morning after early breakfast we will see you off at the Paro Airport for your onward destinations.

Tour Cancellation and Refund Policy

  • 30 to 15 days prior to arrival - 20% of the total tour cost will be levied as cancellation fee.
  • 14 to 7 days prior to arrival - 50% of the tour cost will be levied as cancellation fee.
  • Less than a week prior to arrival - 100% cancellation charge will be levied as cancellation fee.
